(Manchester, NH) —Friday, October 3, 2008, former Governor and current candidate for U.S. Senate Jeanne Shaheen visited the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and received the endorsement of the Metal Trades Council, which represents 2,400 workers at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. At the shipyard, Shaheen met with workers and discussed the need to protect American jobs. Earlier in the day, Shaheen also released a statement expressing concern over the release of September's job loss numbers, which set a five-year high.
"Jeanne Shaheen has been a great friend to the shipyard and a supporter of the rights of workers here," said Paul O'Connor. "For too long, John Sununu has put the special interests ahead of New Hampshire's interests. We need a new direction and new leadership in Washington that will put New Hampshire's middle class families first. The New Hampshire Metal Trades Council is proud to endorse Jeanne Shaheen because she will stand up for New Hampshire's families by ending the tax breaks for companies that ship American jobs overseas, making health care affordable for every American and strengthening our economy by helping create 21st century jobs."
"I am honored to receive the endorsement of the Metal Trades Council, which represents so many of New Hampshire's hard-working families," Shaheen said. "Our economy is failing and the middle class is paying the price for the disastrous Bush-Sununu economic policies that have gotten us here. In the Senate, John Sununu has voted for tax breaks for companies that ship jobs overseas. He's voted for billions in tax breaks to Big Oil while middle class families suffer in this economy.
"When I was Governor, we created 66,000 new jobs in New Hampshire while keeping New Hampshire's tax burden the lowest in the nation. I'll take that same kind of commonsense leadership to Washington. And when I was Governor, we fought to protect the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and keep those jobs right here in New Hampshire.
"In the U.S. Senate, I will oppose efforts to strip Shipyard workers of collective bargaining rights and I will always fight to make sure the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard gets the resources it needs to remain the best shipyard in the country and I will fight to protect the Shipyard from any attempts to close it."
