September Job Loss Highest in More Than Five Years
(Manchester, NH)—Former Governor and current candidate for US Senate Jeanne Shaheen released the following statement today in response to news that American employers cut 159,000 jobs in September, the most in a single month since March 2003:
"Today, we got more disturbing news about the state of our economy. We lost 159,000 jobs in September, more than twice as many as in August or July. It was almost 60,000 more jobs than we were expected to lose. And it's particularly troubling because these numbers represent the economy before the credit crisis and the meltdown on Wall Street.
"Our economy is failing and the middle class is paying the price for the disastrous Bush-Sununu economic policies that have gotten us here. In the Senate, John Sununu has voted for tax breaks for companies that ship jobs overseas. He's voted for billions in tax breaks to Big Oil while middle class families suffer in this economy.
"Something's got to change in Washington. We've got to turn this failed economy around. We have to put middle class families first again and protect American jobs.
"When I was Governor, we created 66,000 new jobs in New Hampshire while keeping New Hampshire's tax burden the lowest in the nation. I'll take that same kind of commonsense leadership to Washington."
