(Manchester, NH) —Today, July 18, 2008, former Governor and current candidate for U.S. Senate Jeanne Shaheen toured Ferrite, Inc. to discuss the need to enhance the role of science in the 21st century and create well-paying jobs.
"Ferrite, Inc. is an excellent example of the kind of research and jobs we should be investing in here in New Hampshire," Shaheen said. "I believe America's future is in maintaining the cutting edge in science and technology, creating new jobs in new industries and giving older industries the tools they need to compete in the global marketplace.
"Progress in science and technology is not just important to expanding our economy. It is critical to keeping our children healthy, our environment clean and establishing a stronger, smarter national defense to protect America from today's security threats."
On July 7, Shaheen delivered a speech at Dartmouth College outlining the need to enhance the role of science in the 21st century. Shaheen believes we need to take the following measures to maintain America's competitive edge in science and research:
• Return to making policy decisions based on science and not ideology.
• Increase federal research funding in science agencies, such as the National Science Foundation and the National Institutes of Health, as well as in the research arms of other agencies, such as the Departments of Defense.
• Stimulate private sector investment in research and development by reinstating the federal research and development tax credit and making it permanent.
• Build a workforce up and down the economic ladder with the knowledge and skills to thrive in the innovation economy.
Ferrite, Inc. is the world's leading provider of high power circulators, isolators, couplers, phase shifters, filters, and loads for industrial, for radar, for medical, for high energy physics and broadcast requirements.
