DERRY- Visiting patrons at Derry's MaryAnn's Diner, Democratic senatorial candidate Jeanne Shaheen (D-Madbury), listened to concerns about a declining economy.

The stop was part of her three-day "Middle Class Matters" tour.

Explaining the current state of the economy Shaheen said, "it's a huge issue people are experiencing."

Shaheen recounted a story of a single mother who is worrier (sic.) her song will not be able to afford college and another story about a small business owner whose business recently closed.

"All of the issues people hear I heard reflected here," Shaheen said.

Shaheen's proposals include expanding Pell grants, extending middle class tax cuts and allow the re-importation of pharmaceutical drugs from Canada.

Shaheen also said she hopes the checks that many Americans will be receiving will benefit the economy, but she would like to see unemployment benefits extended.

"Those are the people more likely to reinvest money back into the economy. Wealthier people would be more inclined to bank that money."

"The economy is something everyone is concerned about and very aware of," said State Rep. Dan McKenna (D-Derry).

McKenna said the event allowed Shaheen to meet one-on-one with Derry residents.

"Events like this are a great way to interact with people and to find out their concerns."
