To the editor: Hard as I try, I just can't ignore Senator Sununu's television ads. Like other Republicans, he's caught the do-over bug, arguing that the voters should send him back to D.C. because he failed to accomplish anything the first time around.
That's the short version of Sununu's claim that he submitted a bill to rein in one of the country's largest mortgage holders, Fannie Mae, soon after he got Washington. What he leaves out, in addition to the fact that freshman senators aren't likely to get any bill passed, is that George W. Bush was still singing the siren song of home ownership at that point and the Republican majority had no interest in regulating a private lending enterprise.
But the really important thing that Sununu leaves out is that the economy hasn't been put at risk by homeowners anyway. If he wants someone to blame let him look to the Wall Street gamblers who were playing with money they didn't have — betting on houses they didn't even own.
Casino capitalism is what they call it, but the games on Wall Street had even fewer rules than Foxwood.
Sad to say John Sununu isn't the only one who hasn't been paying attention. The Chamber of Commerce is running ads trying to blame some fellow who left Fannie Mae four years ago. Talk about being behind the times!
So, it's clear; the message this year has to be: "No More Do-overs." Vote for Democrats from the bottom up.
