ON THE ROAD WITH “GOVY”
Headquarter Openings: Derry and NashuaJune 8, 2008 9:07 PM Another very exciting day on the campaign trail! We very successfully opened the Derry and Nashua headquarters, in 98 degree heat on a Sunday afternoon...have to love leaving San Diego for this brilliant New England weather. I met a woman today who owns a shop in Milford and she is planning to cover the store front windows with the theme "Land of the Free, because of the Brave" and each window will display pictures of American soldiers during each of the wars the United States has been involved in. The display is in honor of the 4th of July and ending the war in Iraq. She asked for pictures of my grandfather (from his time served during WW2), my father (from his time served during Vietnam) and my brother-in-law, who only recently left the Air Force. I would like to thank her of thinking of my family to join her in honoring the heroes of our past, present and future. I met a fabulous 93 year-old woman who is insistent on hosting a party in my mom's honor, as well as attending as many events in her town, as well as surrounding towns as she can. I met an 18 year-old boy who told me he has loved my mom for years because she has always taken time out to talk with him and write emails with him whenever he needed anything. Many other people assured me that they would be spending volunteer hours in the headquarters making phone calls, going door-to-door, and sending letters to help get my mom elected. I am explaining all of these people and their importance in my life because having a mother and family so involved with public service means a lot of time spent away from home. It is not always easy (especially as a 5th grader, which was when all of this chaos errupted) to understand, but every time I meet people who appreciate my mom as much as I do, I understand. All kinds of people showed up and filled the rooms with energy and excitement which makes my job much easier and more fun! So thank you very much to everyone who came to celebrate the return of Shaheen in the 2008 election!
It’s Official Now!June 6, 2008 2:49 PM Okay, for my first campaign blog, I’m going to let you in on a family secret: we call my mother "Govy," hence the name of my blog: "On the Road with Govy." . Today is my first official day on the campaign trail and my sisters Stefany and Stacey and my six month old nephew Nicholas joined my mother as she filed to put her name on the ballot! So, it is a big day in the Shaheen house, we’re both official today! It was great to see so many people come out for my mom even in the cold, rainy weather, and cheer her through the halls of the State House as she went to sign her papers. The last time my mother ran for office, I was 16 years old. I was living on the third floor of my parents' house, focused on important things like friends and entertainment, and had no interest in politics. What a difference six years make! Now, I’m living on the second floor of my parents' house, with a college degree, still pretty interested in friends and the entertainment industry, but I’m developing an interest in politics mainly because I know as a young person, like it or not, we control the future. I have seen a lot in my short 22 years of life and what I have seen lately I don’t like. Our country is slipping and we need people to bring it back in the right direction. Politics can be dirty and frustrating, but like my family, I feel I have no choice but to get my hands dirty for a better and brighter tomorrow. This is what is engaging me in this campagin, leaving sunny San Diego was bitter sweet but this is where I need to be, so I hope that all of you will come on this journey with me. I am here to give the real story about politics. To get away from the political rhetoric that plays on repeat and let you in on what life on the campagin trail is really like! At my mother’s first gubernatorial innaugural celebration, I was in 5th Grade and was caught on camera, in the front row fast asleep! This time around, I’ve made a promise to Govy: I will not fall asleep on camera!
