The Morning with Gov. Howard Dean
by Molly October 13th, 2008
After Gov Dean’s speech I spent the entire day at Keene State. I had lunch and dinner with some students, I did about three hours of call time, we sat down with some student reps to talk with them about get out the vote efforts on campus and we wrapped up the day around 9:30pm at the Keene State Dems meeting. There was also a student registration drive on campus and I’m told we got a little over 100 new students registered, so that’s great progress!
I love going back to college!
Kind of a Big Deal…
by Molly October 13th, 2008
Anyway…we went all over the state! UNH Homecoming, Dartmouth, Plymouth, Concord house party, we stopped to see fire fighters (good men!)…it was really fun.
These are the kind of events I do on a daily basis but it is really fun to have some new people around to jazz it up!
Thank you to everyone who showed up to talk with us!!
Back to High School we go!
by Molly October 7th, 2008Today was all about Winnacunnet! I worked a table for the coordinated campaign and talked with students for awhile in the morning. We also stopped by a few classrooms to say hi and remind students to pay attention to what is going on between now and November 4th.
Next, of course came more office work (just can’t get enough).
Now that students are back in school I have been out at different schools almost every day so we don’t really get to travel together as much.
Obama/McCain Debate Tonight!!! Watch!
Things are getting crazy!!!
by Molly October 7th, 2008There are only 28 days left until the election and so we are all working over time! This morning at 8am I went to Philips Exeter to talk with classes about the election, which was really interesting! It is so nice to see high school students so engaged not only with what is going on in the campaigns but also what is going on in the world. It is really an amazing school!
From there we went to the second debate of the campaign so I could watch my mom. Unfortunately, given that my navigation skills are not the best, we got a little lost and were late so I had to sit in the lobby and watch (which was probably best seeing as how I get a little anxious). She did really well! I was quite proud!
That was followed by hours and hours of call time and emails and office work, not the most fun stuff but definitely necessary.
I finally left the office 630 so that I could try to get to a fundraiser but again, I got lost! So I didn’t make it…I did however make it to the Portsmouth office! I wanted to stop and say hi to everyone and thank them for coming in and making calls and working! The volunteers are so essential to the race and we have the very best volunteers. They work so hard and come in every chance they get!! So THANK YOU! we love you!
Claremont Chili
by Molly October 4th, 2008Fall is in the air! After going to school in San Diego for four years, it is so nice to see the leaves changing again! The two-hour drive north to Claremont from the Seacoast was beautiful today. There was the annual October chili contest and street fair in Claremont and I got to go campaign for my mom, which basically meant eating for the day. That is my kind of day…I love it when the job includes being a food critic. It was really interesting walking around and talking with people about the election. Several people came up to me to ask me questions about different policies or what she had done as Governor, which was nice because it gives me a chance to tell the truth about her record and what is actually going on, rather than the rhetoric and misleading attacks that can be said on TV or in ads.
Don’t let the money machine distract you from what is really going on in this race. This is about the future of our country, the past 8 years in Washington have been chaos for New Hampshire families and it is time for change.
Foxy Stem Cell Research
by Molly September 23rd, 2008Today was an amazing day! We had Michael J. Fox come to UNH and SNHU to publicly give his support to
my mother and advocate for expanded stem cell research!
After watching Family Ties and Back to the Future growing up, it was so exciting to have him here supporting my mom. For those who don’t know, he has Parkinson’s disease and stem cell research promises a cure. The current administration has limited stem cell research, which essentially means we have lost 7 years of research for countless diseases. Recently, this has affected my family even more. My 9 year-old neice, Elle, was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes a little less than a year ago. Basically this means that she has to give herself a calculated amount of insulin in a shot any time she wants to eat something. If we don’t find a cure, she will be giving herself shots for the rest of her life. In just 8 months we have estimated that she has gone through more than 1,000 needles. It is so sad to watch her prick her little finger and then stick a needle into her arm, leg or stomach. It seems so unfair and she is only one of millions of people who are suffering every day from all kinds of diseases that could be cured or better treated because of stem cell research. Watching Michael speak was so moving, he has so much courage and drive to be out here fighting for a cure. It was a very powerful and emotional event. I looked around the room when he finished speaking and people were crying all over the place, both for him and for themselves and family members who are ill. These are the days on the trail when I feel so lucky to be healthy, and so determined to get my mom elected so that she can help the people who need her.
My Huge TV Debut!!!!
by Molly September 19th, 2008Tonight PBS aired a special called “Women, Power, and Politics.” The documentary covered three women in detail, one of whom was my mom, to discuss the role of women in politics. They also talked with the President of Chile, Michelle Bachelet, and some women who serve in Rwanda’s legislature. It was a really big honor for my mom to represent America!
I have been basically traveling with my mom full time all summer, so they asked if it would be alright to include me in the footage and to interview me, as well. We said yes and so tonight I had my big break! They showed a segment of one of the interviews I did and some other random footage they got while they were traveling around with us.
To my mom and dad this stuff isn’t really new but for me its really new and fun. I cut out all of the newspaper articles and pictures and try to save everything I can.
The show will be airing on PBS for a while, so you should try to check it out if you can!
You can watch it here: http://www.pbs.org/now/shows/437/index.html
New Hampshire Young Democrats Kennedy Awards
by Molly September 19th, 2008Tonight my major task at hand was to go to the Shaskeen bar in Manchester…as a 22 year old work-aholic, this was a pretty nice change of scenery. The Kennedy Awards at the Shaskeen bar brought in a lot of big names! The night was put on by the NH Young Dems and was basically a fundraiser for the Young Dems running for state rep. Several of the candidates attended and spoke, including with Carol Shea-Porter, Kathleen Shea-Porter (her daughter), Paul Hodes, Lou D’Allesandro, Ray Buckley, Matt Kennedy, and some others. Steve Marchand was also there because he was actually the one receiving the Kennedy Award. The Young Dem events are really nice to go to because there are always people there I can relate to. Especially when Kathleen is around…she and I basically have the same job for our mothers and have an understanding for what is really like to try and deal with a parent in politics and the media. Yet another day on the glamorous trail.
